On Monday, leaders of the Beni Amer and Nuba signed a reconciliation peace accord in eastern Sudan's Kassala, in the presence of Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The agreement was signed by the chief nazir<\/em> of the Beni Amer and a representative of the tribesmen from the Nuba Mountains. Hamdok said at the signing ceremony that this reconciliation is consistent with the slogan of the revolution “Freedom, Peace, and Justice”. He stressed that peace is the top priority of the transitional government.<\/p>\n

The peace accord stipulates the annulment of all complaints, including homicide cases. The Kassala state government guarantees the payment of compensation, which amountsto SDG 120 million ($2.2 million*).<\/p>\n

People in Kassala organised a protest vigil in front of the government buildings on Monday. In a memorandum handed to Hamdok, they demanded the removal of the acting military governor, intervention of the authorities to prevent the smuggling of basic commodities from the region, and the absence of development projects.<\/p>\n

Last year, bloody clashes between Beni Amer and Nuba tribesmen erupted in Kassala as well as in Port Sudan. On September 9,<\/a> Port Sudan witnessed the signing of a reconciliation document between Nuba and Beni Amer in the Red Sea state capital.<\/p>\n
