The Sudanese Farmers’ Union has urged the government to address the issue of storage and transportation of last season’s wheat harvest. For the first time, the Sudanese government has decided to purchase the entire wheat production directly from the farmers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a statement on Thursday, the union claimed that some farmers could not deliver their wheat to the Agricultural Bank of Sudan yet. The statement explained that a significant part of the product is stored in plastic sacks, which are vulnerable to damage.<\/p>\n

The union said that the main challenges the farmers face are the approaching the rainy season while the wheat production remained in the fields in plastic sacks that were due to the shortage of burlap sacks, and these could not bear high temperatures.<\/p>\n

The statement added that the transaction between the government and the farmers was concluded through the Agricultural Bank of Sudan. The bank was supposed to receive the products from the farmers.<\/p>\n

The farmers demand practical solutions to the problems of transportation and storage in the warehouses during the hand over to the Agricultural Bank.<\/p>\n

The union stressed the need to protect “the strategic wheat stocks” from theft and smuggling out of the country.<\/p>\n
