The joint UN-AU Mission in Darfur (Unamid) sent reinforcements to Kalma camp for the displaced near Nyala to prevent escalation after two people were shot and killed last week<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last week, three nomads driving to Nyala, capital of South Darfur, lost their way in Kalma camp, and were attacked. Omda Taha Dunkus and his brother Ali Dunkus did not survive the assault.<\/p>\n

During his meeting with Deputy Chairman of the Sovereign Council and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Commander Lt Gen Mohamed Hamdan ‘Hemeti’ in Khartoum, the head of Unamid, Joint Special Representative\/Joint Chief Mediator Jeremiah Mamabolo, commended the RSF efforts to contain the situation and prevent fighting in Kalma camp.<\/p>\n

Mamabolo stressed the importance of conducting an investigation into the murder and bring those involved to justice. Minister of Cabinet Affairs Omar Manis said during the funeral of the two victims<\/a> on Friday that the murderers will not go unpunished.<\/p>\n

Unamid will provide a mediator to enable the judicial agencies to conduct an investigation, arrest the perpetrators, and bring them to justice.<\/p>\n

Hemeti stressed that the protection of the people in the country, especially the displaced in the camps, is “primarily the responsibility of the government”.<\/p>\n

During a meeting in Khartoum on Sunday, the head of Unamid agreed with the Minister of Cabinet Affairs, the Minister of Justice, and the Attorney General in Khartoum to establish two committees.<\/p>\n

A joint investigation committee, to be led by the Attorney General, will investigate the killing itself. The other committee will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the security situation in a number of camps for the displaced, in order to create safety and security for the inhabitants.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Interior Affairs, Maj Gen El Tareifi Idris, discussed the current arrangements in order to come up with a plan to protect civilians and displaced people in Darfur.<\/p>\n
