{"id":172119,"date":"2020-10-29T12:24:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-29T12:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dabangasudan.preview.websight.nl\/north-darfur-women-protest-against-marginalisation\/"},"modified":"2020-10-29T12:24:00","modified_gmt":"2020-10-29T12:24:00","slug":"north-darfur-women-protest-against-marginalisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/north-darfur-women-protest-against-marginalisation","title":{"rendered":"North Darfur women protest against marginalisation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>On Tuesday, dozens of women from the Abu Shouk camp for the displaced organised a vigil in front of the headquarters of the UN-AU Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in El Fasher, capital of North Darfur, in protest against the marginalisation of women in the camps. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Participants of the vigil -which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/unamid-to-exit-darfur-on-december-31\">coincided with the visit<\/a> of African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security&nbsp;Sma\u0457l Chergui&nbsp;and UN Under Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix to the mission- raised banners saying &ldquo;Displaced women have rights too&rdquo; and &ldquo;Justice is a national duty&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p>Salwa Jaafar, representative of the Abu Shouk camp protesters, told the reporters in El Fasher that &ldquo;women in the camps feel they are treated like second-rate citizens, while should have an effective role in their society&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p>She said that they chose the UNAMID office as venue for their protest because &ldquo;of the seriousness of the UN agencies&#39; officials in dealing with the issues of the displaced&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p>She affirmed that the women in the Darfur camps for the displaced welcome and support the peace agreement &ldquo;which stipulates the participation of displaced women in decision-making positions in public functions&rdquo;.<\/p>\n<p>A UN-funded mapping exercise earlier this year to promote political participation and identify and later train potential candidates <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@UNDPArabic\/finding-sudans-future-women-political-leaders-1-070-and-rising-f0c66082426c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found over 1,000 women willing<\/a> to represent their communities, despite barriers ranging from patriarchal systems and lack of training, to travel expenses and childcare needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Representation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Women have been visible leaders on the frontlines of the 2018 December Revolution against the regime of Omar Al Bashir, ousted in April the following year.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-sudan-women-rights-idUSKBN1W4369\">News outlets estimated<\/a> that about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalfundforwomen.org\/sudan-womens-revolution-fighting-for-freedom\/\">70 per cent of the protesters<\/a> were women.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, following the protests, women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/darfur-women-demand-more-power\">in Darfur<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/khartoum-protest-against-low-representation-of-women\">in Khartoum<\/a> have been calling more than once for a broader representation in the new transitional government.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-military-junta-and-civilian-movement-leaders-to-sign-historic-constitutional-declaration-today\">Constitutional Document of August 2019<\/a> guarantees 40 per cent representation to women in the 300-seat Legislative Council, still to be formed. The new quota is an increase from the previous representation quota of 25 per cent set during the former regime of ousted President Omar Al Bashir.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok appointed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/prime-minister-hamdouk-presents-new-sudanese-government\">four women ministers<\/a> in September 2019 (Foreign Affairs, Labour and Social Development, Higher Education, and Youth and Sports). The current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/cabinet-reshuffle-six-sudanese-ministers-resign-one-dismissed\">acting Finance Minister<\/a> is a woman.<\/p>\n<p>Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-campaign-demands-women-governors\">campaigns<\/a> demanding an increase of women at decision-making posts, only two women are among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/civilian-governors-appointed-for-sudan-s-18-states\">18 new civilian state governors appointed<\/a> in July this year.<\/p>\n<p>Concerning oppressive legislation, in November last year the new government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-dissolves-national-congress-party-repeals-public-order-bill\">repealed the repressive Public Order Law<\/a>, one of the tools of the Al Bashir regime to repress women.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-moves-forward-on-legal-amendments\">death penalty for apostasy<\/a> has been repealed. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-to-criminalise-female-genital-mutilation\">Female Genital Mutilation<\/a> (FGM) has been outlawed and the execution of children has been banned.
