From the first outbreak to the third wave and the vaccine roll-out, the sharp-witted and often barbed pen of Radio Dabanga&#39;s resident cartoonist, Omar Dafallah, has documented not only Sudan&#39;s struggle with COVID-19 so far, but also clearly reflected&nbsp;on the pandemic and the world&#39;s response&nbsp;in a global context.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The start of the pandemic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/first-coronavirus-case-confirmed-in-sudan-as-khartoum-man-dies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first case of COVID-19<\/a>&nbsp;was confirmed&nbsp;in Sudan in March 2020, when a man in his 50s died in a Khartoum hospital. Around the same time, Sudan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-bars-entry-from-coronavirus-hotspots-egypt-border-lockdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended flights<\/a>&nbsp;from COVID-19 hotspots and closed all crossing points between Sudan and Egypt. Not long after, Sudan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-declares-health-emergency-to-combat-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared a health emergency<\/a> to combat the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\">\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"display:inline-block\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"437\" src=\"\/uploads\/media\/610291f4e1ee4.jpeg\" width=\"550\" \/><figcaption><em>COVID-19 turning society into a sinking ship<br \/>\n&#8211; Cartoon by Omar Dafallah (RD)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Curbing the spread<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As more cases&nbsp;were discovered, Sudan warned about the spread of the virus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/minister-all-coronavirus-patients-in-sudan-travelled-from-abroad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from abroad<\/a>. On April 5, Sudan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/coronavirus-update-sudan-closes-border-with-egypt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closed its border<\/a> with Egypt again. Later that month, the government decided on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/coronavirus-sudan-faces-three-week-lockdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lockdown<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\">\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"display:inline-block\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"400\" src=\"\/uploads\/media\/5fd907872274a.jpeg\" width=\"550\" \/><figcaption><em>COVID-19 entering Sudan by land and air<br \/>\n&#8211; Cartoon by Omar Dafallah (RD)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global epidemic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Around the same time, the scale of the spread in other countries became&nbsp;clear. Despite the lockdown, registered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/registered-coronavirus-cases-in-sudan-double-in-two-weeks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cases doubled<\/a> in two weeks in May and medics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/covid-19-in-sudan-more-than-3-100-recorded-cases-medics-call-for-protection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called for more protection<\/a>. People in isolation centres complained about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/covid-19-in-sudan-5-714-cases-recorded-unamid-continues-to-support-govt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lack of essential basics<\/a>, such as clean drinking water.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sovereignty Council member and Deputy Chairman of the High Committee for Health Emergencies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-has-a-unsupportive-community-culture-to-deal-with-the-covid-19-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Siddig Tawir complained<\/a>&nbsp;that Sudan &ldquo;lacks a supportive community culture to deal with the coronavirus pandemic&rdquo;.&nbsp;A woman activist organised a COVID-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/women-activist-starts-covid-19-awareness-campaign-in-west-darfur-camps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">awareness campaign<\/a> in&nbsp;the camps for the displaced.<\/p>\n<p>In July and August, Sudan finally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/covid-19-measures-eased-in-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eased&nbsp;its lockdown<\/a> but not long after,&nbsp;cases <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/number-of-covid-19-cases-in-sudan-rises-after-easing-of-lockdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were on the rise<\/a> again. A&nbsp;curfew remained in place but this was largely ignored. The rise in cases <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/covid-19-is-affecting-sudan-s-poor-health-care-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised many concerns<\/a> about the impact of the pandemic on Sudan&#39;s underfunded and already over-extended&nbsp;healthcare&nbsp;services.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\">\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"display:inline-block\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"400\" src=\"\/uploads\/media\/5f7f21056340c.jpeg\" width=\"550\" \/><figcaption><em>Healthcare workers struggle to protect the Sudanese from COVID-19 as health precautions are ignored<br \/>\n&#8211; Cartoon by Omar Dafallah (RD)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second wave<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In November 2020&nbsp;it became clear that Sudan, like so many other countries, was facing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudanese-government-needs-new-protocol-for-covid-19-second-wave\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second wave<\/a> of COVID-19 infections. The public was urged to&nbsp;observe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudanese-public-urged-to-observe-covid-19-precautions-amid-second-wave-of-infections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19 precautions<\/a> as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/covid-19-death-toll-rises-in-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">death toll<\/a> rose again. In the meantime, Sudan faced&nbsp;a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/unamid-reports-human-rights-violations-in-darfur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surge in violence<\/a> in Darfur.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\">\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"display:inline-block\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"400\" src=\"\/uploads\/media\/5fd91a161cd86.jpeg\" width=\"550\" \/><figcaption><em>COVID-19 as the hidden enemy in Sudan&#39;s conflicts<br \/>\n&#8211; Cartoon by Omar Dafallah (RD)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In December, a study found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/icl-only-2-of-covid-19-deaths-recorded-in-khartoum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only 2% of COVID-19 deaths<\/a> were actually recorded as such in Khartoum, indicating that most of the pandemic went unrecorded and cases were probably much higher than the official records could show.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vaccines<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Around the end of 2020, COVID-19 vaccine programmes were&nbsp;rolled out globally. Sudan also planned&nbsp;to distribute the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-to-provide-8-4-covid-19-vaccines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first doses of the vaccine<\/a> in the first quarter of 2021, hoping to make 2021 an easier year.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\">\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"display:inline-block\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"400\" src=\"\/uploads\/media\/6103a4f641a76.jpeg\" width=\"550\" \/><figcaption><em>COVID-19 vaccines as the solution<br \/>\n&#8211; Cartoon by Omar Dafallah (RD)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\">\n<figure class=\"image\" style=\"display:inline-block\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"400\" src=\"\/uploads\/media\/6103a5d222dde.jpeg\" width=\"550\" \/><figcaption><em>2021 as the year of the vaccines<br \/>\n&#8211; Cartoon by Omar Dafallah (RD)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>New variants, new problems<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Global hopes that&nbsp;vaccines will deliver a quick end to the pandemic became a distant reality as new variants of the virus emerged and vaccines were distributed unequally.&nbsp;At the start of the year, cases&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/covid-19-dangerous-spread-continues-in-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rise &#39;dangerously&#39;<\/a>&nbsp;and doctors warn about the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudanese-doctor-warns-about-regional-disparity-and-lack-of-resources-as-covid-19-cases-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lack of resources<\/a>. As cases rise everywhere due to this highly contagious variant, the global vaccine roll-out becomes a race against the clock. USA-based NGO Internews published a community feedback report on COVID-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/internews-most-fake-covid-19-rumours-in-sudan-concerned-with-possible-treatments-or-cures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">information and rumours<\/a> in Sudan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Internews, most rumours (52%) were related to possible treatments or cures for COVID-19 infections:&nbsp;&ldquo;Herbal remedies and other readily available treatments in the six states are considered the best alternatives for treating COVID-19 or other medical conditions, since [&#8230;]&nbsp;healthcare facilities are limited or unavailable in href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/health-minister-calls-for-better-precautions-as-covid-19-cases-rise-in-khartoum-port-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cases are on the rise<\/a> in Sudan with over 30 deaths a day in Port Sudan only.&nbsp;Medical sources <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/covid-19-spikes-in-sudan-s-red-sea-state-call-for-lockdown-curfew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Radio Dabanga<\/a> the Delta variant (aka the Indian strain) is spreading in Port Sudan, however Minister of Health, Dr Omar El Najeeb denied the existence of evidence confirming this.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organisation has made a new appeal for vaccines for Africa, saying a &ldquo;fast-surging&rdquo; third wave of Covid-19 is outpacing efforts to protect populations, &ldquo;leaving more and more dangerously exposed&rdquo;,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jun\/24\/africans-dangerously-exposed-by-lack-of-covid-jabs-says-who\" style=\"box-sizing: border-box; background: rgb(241,
