In October, the civilian sections of the government were divided over which course to follow. On October 25, Sudan\u2019s <\/strong><strong>military <\/strong><a href=\"\/Users\/andre\/AppData\/Local\/Microsoft\/Windows\/INetCache\/Content.Outlook\/NIUZ5397\/Sudan%20military%20seizes%20power,%20detains%20PM,%20Ministers%20in%20dawn%20coup\"><strong>seized power<\/strong><\/a><strong> in a coup d\u2019\u00e9tat, placing civilian Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok under house arrest. In western Sudan, insecurity increased and in the eastern part of the country sea ports and roads were blocked by the High Council of Beja Nazirs who demand the cancellation of the Eastern Sudan protocol of the October 2020 Juba Peace Agreement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The military coup immediately resulted in a massive campaign of pro-democracy protests and civil disobedience organised by the Resistance Committees. This was met by a violent crackdown by the coup forces, which has seen scores of civilians killed, hundreds injured, and many more detained. Foreign aid donors immediately turned off the financial taps.<\/p>\n<p>On November 21, in an attempt to break the post-coup impasse, Sudan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-s-pm-hamdok-reinstated-but-opposition-reject-deal\">Hamdok is reinstated<\/a> after an accord with the military junta, but opposition forces reject the deal.<\/p>\n<p>This brief political respite cannot withstand the critical mass of public dissent, coupled with violent government response, and as the year draws to a close, Hamdok\u2019s position becomes increasingly precarious, resulting in his resignation during the first days of 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sudan timeline, October &#8211; December 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>October: On October 25, Sudan\u2019s military <a href=\"\/Users\/andre\/AppData\/Local\/Microsoft\/Windows\/INetCache\/Content.Outlook\/NIUZ5397\/Sudan%20military%20seizes%20power,%20detains%20PM,%20Ministers%20in%20dawn%20coup\">seized power<\/a> in a coup d\u2019\u00e9tat, placing civilian Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok under house arrest amid a chorus of condemnation from at home and abroad.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>October 2: The USA calls on the parties to the government in Sudan to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/washington-urges-sudan-to-accelerate-transition-to-civilian-rule\">reach a consensus<\/a> on the date for the transfer of the presidency of the Sovereignty Council to civilians. More delay may hamper major US support.<\/p>\n<p>October 3: On the Juba Peace Agreement\u2019s first anniversary, the Sudan Troika <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/troika-deeply-concerned-about-sudan-peace-process\">congratulates the Sudanese<\/a>. It, however, is \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d about the delayed implementation of the agreement. Twelve young Darfuri women and girls from the Kounongou refugee camp in eastern Chad are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/twelve-darfuri-refugee-women-and-girls-raped-in-eastern-chad\">raped by cattle herders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>October 4: The deadline for the Sudanese government to respond to the demands of the eastern Sudanese High Council of Beja Nazirs and Independent Chieftains and end the Eastern Sudan Track protocol of the Juba Peace Agreement ends this evening. Beja have closed ports and highways in eastern Sudan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/deadline-for-sudan-govt-to-respond-to-beja-leaders-demands-ends-today\">to protest the agreement<\/a>. Four suspects and a security agent are killed during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/officer-killed-in-new-raid-on-terrorist-cell-in-sudan-capital\">a raid<\/a> on a terrorist cell in Khartoum. Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, Head of the Sovereignty Council and Commander of the Sudan Armed Forces, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/el-burhan-urges-implementation-of-security-arrangements-in-darfur\">urges the implementation<\/a> of security arrangements in Darfur.<\/p>\n<p>October 5: Sudan\u2019s Empowerment Removal Committee* (ERC) protests the High Court\u2019s decision to nullify the committees\u2019 dismissal of judicial employees affiliated with the former regime of Omar Al Bashir. Several initiatives have been launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/national-initiatives-to-defuse-political-tensions-in-sudan\">to defuse tensions<\/a> between the civilian and military components of the Sudanese government. Jabra neighbourhood in southern Khartoum again witnesses heavy deployment of security forces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-security-forces-search-khartoum-neighbourhood-for-terrorists-weapons\">searching the neighbourhood<\/a> for Islamic terrorists. Finance Minister Jibril Ibrahim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-finance-minister-lauds-efforts-to-unify-ffc\">lauds efforts<\/a> of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC), the driving force behind the Sudanese uprising, to unify it ranks. Sudanese lawyers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudanese-lawyers-call-for-a-civilian-govt\">call for<\/a> a civilian government.<\/p>\n<p>October 15: PM Hamdok says that Sudan is facing its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/pm-hamdok-sudan-facing-worst-and-most-dangerous-crisis\">most dangerous crisis<\/a>. At least four people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/at-least-four-dead-as-sudan-military-fires-on-anti-coup-demonstrators\">are killed<\/a> as government forces fire on anti-coup demonstrators. Anti-coup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/condemnations-civil-disobedience-actions-against-sudan-military-coup-continue\">protests continue<\/a> in Khartoum and other states, while main roads and bridges in the capital remain blocked by military forces. The Central Committee of Sudan Doctors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/death-toll-rises-hundreds-wounded-in-sudan-anti-coup-demos\">announces<\/a> that the number of victims of the anti-coup demonstrations has risen to at least 12 dead and hundreds wounded.
