The protesters submitted a strong worded memorandum to the Press Council calling for its immediate intervention to protect the media against the \u201cvicious and systematic attacks\u201d by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), and to cancel the suspension of several journalists. The memo stated that the Sudanese press is witnessing an \u201calarming setback\u201d, referring to the statement by the Minister of Information on 19 May warning the media not to cover items that \u201cpose a danger to national security and the country as a whole\u201d. Any newspaper that crosses the \u201cred lines\u201d would be suspended, the minister threatened. \u00a0\u201cThose red lines are loose and many-sided. State security prosecutor Also on Sunday, more than ten journalists appeared before the state security\u2019s prosecutor. They were released on bail, provided that they appear in court later. If they do not appear, each of them will have to pay a fine of SDG50,000 ($8,700). Loai Abdel Rahman,\u00a0a journalist of El Saiha daily newspaper that was banned by the NISS on 17 May, told Radio Dabanga that the journalists were summoned to appear before the State Attorney. \u201cYet, accused journalists are supposed to be summoned by the Press and Publications Attorney rather than the state security\u2019s prosecutor.\u201d He mentioned Osman Mudawi, Abdel Wahab Juma, Ibrahim Mirghani, Islam El Amin, Idris El Doma, and\u00a0Lubna Abdallah among the journalists who appeared before the prosecutor on Sunday. He himself, Nabawiya Sirelkhatim, Marwa Kamal, Amar Awad, Faisal Abdel Rahman, El Tayeb Yasin, Mahjoub Osman, Abdel Hamid Awad, and Ahmed Yousif El Tai were summoned to appear today and on Tuesday. Eight journalists appeared\u00a0before the\u00a0prosecution\u00a0on Wednesday and Thursday, on charges of crimes against the state: Idris El Doma, Mohamed Wid\u2019a, Baha Eldin Eisa, Imam Mohamed Imam, Yasir Mahjoub, Ahmed Yousif El Tai, Hafiz El Kheir, and Salah Awouda, in addition to the security\u2019s summoning of El Taghyeer newspaper\u2019s correspondent in Nyala, Khaled Jibril.
