The trial of 17 young Sudanese protesters began in the Southern Courts Compound in central Khartoum this morning. A second group will be tried on Tuesday. The 11 women and six men were detained on Sunday when they staged a protest against the recent economic measures on Airport Road in Khartoum. They were charged with creating chaos and disturbing public order. Defence lawyer Manal Awad Khojaly, who is a member of Lawyers Without Borders, told Radio Dabanga that the Judge adjourned the session after hearing the prosecutor representing the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) and a NISS officer, as a witness for the prosecution. The trial will be resumed on Wednesday, with the hearing of another witness. Khojaly explained that the 26 protesters held on Sunday have been split into two groups. The first group was brought to trial today. The second group will appear in court on Tuesday morning. She added that all accused have been released on bail.
<thumbnail_url>https://www.dabangasudan.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/cropped-dabanga-logo-zondernaam-512x512-1.png</thumbnail_url><thumbnail_width>512</thumbnail_width><thumbnail_height>512</thumbnail_height></oembed>
